Superb £970,000 re-development in St Agnes creates new centre for the community
The Miners & Mechanics Institute in St Agnes unveiled an amazing new look on September 18th.
The MMI is now offering its new centre as a place for the local and wider community to use for events, functions and regular classes.
"We have had an investment of over £900,000" says Dawn Brown, Chairman of the new St Agnes MMI "and the building has been completely updated with a modern look as a place St Agnes can be proud of."
Nerys Watts, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager in the South West who donated £150,000 to this project commented; "we are delighted that St Agnes Miners and Mechanics Institute have been awarded this grant. Not only will it help to restore a Grade II Listed building but it will increase access and provide learning opportunities for both the local community and visitors."
The new MMI has large, light rooms offered for use by the whole community. Completely new events held at the centre are planned, including:
- Soft play mornings sessions for young children
- A snooker room for older children with a semi-professional snooker player willing to give group tutoring as part of a youth investment programme
- A Heritage room dedicated to the history of the St Agnes area (and serving Cornwall’s World Heritage Team)
- Fitness Classes for all ages
- Training classes, from computers and software to fitness for all ages
- Weddings, 50th Birthday celebrations, Events & Functions – including conferences
